Controversial Cal’s thoughts
Interesting move for the Celtics to consider signing Stephon Marbury as their backup point guard. Looks like the league can promote a new storyline now. Instead of “Kobe tries to win a championship without Shaq”, or “Lebron leads a team of nobodies to the promised land”, we now have the story of “Defending champs cure one of the biggest cancers and turn Marbury into a champion”. After doing a little digging around a couple questions arose in my mind.
Will Marbury stab Rajan Rondo in the back?
Rondo has proven to be an effective point guard leading his team to win after win. When he plays well the Celtics play well. But can Stephon Marbury handle being second fiddle after being the starting point guard for so long? Will he outwork Rondo and make a case to start for the Celtics? Will he be trigger happy to show that he has the jumpshot Rondo dreams of?
Will the Celtics win the championship?
The defending champs seem to play well when they have something to prove. In the beginning of the season they were talking so much trash just to stay motivated because no one else was saying they couldn’t win the championship. They had plenty of motivation last year. The critics always used to talk about how KG could end up being the next Charles Barkley or Karl Malone (a.k.a. superstar that never won a championship, mostly because of a better superstar). But KG proved them wrong by beating two of the leading MVP candidates in the playoffs last year (Lebron and Kobe). They also said Paul Pierce was too selfish and would never play defense. Wrong. He held Lebron and Kobe in check at times last year. Now they have the motivation of trying to get a known chemistry killer, self proclaimed best point guard in the NBA to put personal glory aside and come off the bench to win a championship.
What about Eddie House?
Eddie has been the best player coming off the bench this year. He has been on fire this year and has a shot that can change the momentum in the game. And now here comes Stephon Marbury to take those shots away. Stephon has been known to jack up a shot or two. And lets not forget that Eddie and Stephon might not even like eachother. New York and Boston have always trash talked eachother. It happened between Eddie and Stephon in the preseason. I remember Marbuy calling House a “bum”. That should be a fun backcourt to watch.
